The local shop has Federal 16ga game load for $10/25, which is pretty great. What is not great is how my 1920s auto five has a short chamber and can’t get it out the ejector port. Cue x-acto, cardstock, glue.
See, the expanded star crimp makes it too long. Cut star crimp, and it cycles.

Has that A-5 turned your shoulder to dust yet?

With being a 16 and with the way the whole barrel goes into recovery, recoil is really light.

Interesting. I’ve only shot 12g A5s and IMO I’d rather shoot a pump. It almost feels like getting hit twice with the stock and receiver hitting you first followed by the bolt and barrel.

Might need to be calibrated. I’ve been told that you have to have the friction rings set right for the loads you’re firing, and getting a second “hit” sounds like the friction is too low.
Granted, I haven’t been firing 16ga buck (because 16ga target and game loads are what’s easiest to find), and mine being a 16 is also going to be less aggressive regardless.
The local shop has a modern engraved 12ga auto five that’s nearly new, but it’s commensurately expensive. Just as well to deal with the antique and its quirks.

Well, I would have to hand load to have safe loads for the fluid steel single action break and the twist steel coach, so I might as well start that - since I haven’t put the Remington coach back together, the Iver Johnson kicks like a mule with normal loads anyway, and I don’t have an Ithaca yet...
I ought to get an Ithaca in 16 so I have more than one to load 16 for, that’s what.

I realized I had that same problem last week with a turkey load in my Remington model 31. Still killed the turkey just fine though... Next year I should really treat my mossberg 500 to a barrel threaded for chokes and use that instead.

Is yours actually a 2-9/16" setup like mine is, or just not meant to fire 2 3/4 *with star crimp*?

Most likely the latter? I haven’t measured but it’s been fed mostly 2 3/4 target loads and seems to handle them fine. The 2 3/4 turkey loads I got however don’t want to eject, although I’ve only fired it twice that way - once to pattern it and the second to take the bird. Is there a year 2 3/4 became standard? The gun was manufactured in 1931

I don’t know - mine was made around 1927 and was apparently meant to take 2 9/16, though it chambers 2 3/4, just doesn’t eject. If I were firing 2 3/4 paper hulls it wouldn’t be a problem, I know that, but 2 3/4 star crimped plastic... no.
